Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFO)
AFOs are commonly prescribed orthotic devices designed to control both the foot and ankle complex. Every AFO is unique in its design, as each is custom made to meet the specific needs of the individual patient. Common ailments that may require AFOs include neuromuscular malfunction, such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, or stroke, and disorders of the skeletal system, such as osteoarthritis, or bone deformities. The orthotic goal of AFOs is to increase function, decrease pain, and prevent further progression of the ailment.
Knee-Ankle Foot Orthotics (KAFO)
Like the AFO, a KAFO controls the foot and ankle, but extends above the knee. Once again the design of each KAFO is as unique as the individual that will wear it. Common reasons for KAFO prescription include polio, severe knee and ankle instability, paralysis, etc.
